The short day is a real organisational problem in autumn and winter: the works are pressing, and the light is gone. Except working after dark without proper lighting isn't a "difficulty" - it's a breach of the regulations and a straight road to an accident: tripping on rubble, falling off a slab edge, being struck by a reversing machine. What the regulations say about site lighting
The basis is the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 6 February 2003 on occupational safety and health during construction works. The rule is simple: wherever daylight is insufficient - because it's dusk, night, or you're working in a windowless room - you provide artificial lighting. This applies to workstations, but also to roads, walkways and access routes used by people and equipment.
The regulations also set quality requirements: artificial lighting must not dazzle workers or make signs and signals on the site unreadable. A spotlight shining straight into an excavator operator's eyes is formally lighting - practically it's a hazard. Specific illuminance values for different types of work are set by the Polish Standards on lighting - on larger sites it's worth basing the lighting layout on them.
Which works after dark are outright prohibited
The sharpest provision concerns scaffolding: assembly and dismantling must not be carried out at dusk unless lighting giving good visibility is provided. The same logic applies to other works requiring precision and good visibility - work at height, work in trenches or vertical transport after dark need lighting that lets you see edges, obstacles and the other person. How to organise site lighting - practically

Equipment-wise, lighting masts and LED floodlights usually suffice - what matters is that the installation is built and run safely: cables protected against damage and moisture, distribution boards sound, the whole covered by measurements. A high-visibility vest or clothing is essential in the short-day season - especially for people working near machines, site traffic and roads. Planning works around a short day
- Precise and hazardous work in the middle of the day - rebar work on a slab edge or scaffolding work suits 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. better than 3 to 5 p.m.
- Indoor work for the end of the shift - finishing works inside the building can run under artificial light without risk.
- Test the lighting before the season - in October, not on the day of the first dark shift.
- Set a stop rule - who decides visibility is too poor and work stops; the same logic as for wind and rainfall.

Is working after dark on a construction site allowed?
